Here Malevich has used paint to imitate the Cubist technique of collage, even using the grain of the wood panel to suggest the surface of the violin. While the overlapping of colored shapes seems to flatten the composition, there are some paradoxical spatial effects, such as the shadow of the violin neck cast against the white rectangle. Within this Cubist frame of reference, the representations of the cow and the violin emphasize the painting's abstract autonomy.
